New Disaster Nursing CEU's Available

The American Red Cross Office of the Chief Nurse has collaborated with Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society of nursing, to develop an online continuing education  offering,

"Disaster Preparedness and Response for Nurses."

Available at no cost to nurses, this offering is designed to provide nurses with an overview of their role in responding to a weapons of mass destruction/terrorism (WMD/T) event or other disaster. It is an excellent way to increase the awareness of the importance of nurses in disaster preparedness and response. Nurses can receive 2 contact hours of continuing education credit.

FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI) Independent Study Program.

All materials on the linked Internet site are available to anyone who can access them. However, official enrollment in the courses, scoring of final exams, issuance of certificates, and maintenance of student records is limited to United States Citizens with a US deliverable postal address  http://www.training.fema.gov/emiweb/IS/

The EMI Independent Study program consists of self-paced courses  designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. Courses are offered free-of-charge to all who qualify for enrollment.

Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI. Course completion times vary from two to fourteen hours, depending on the course and the student's background.
In an effort to meet requirements established by the Paperwork Reduction Act, EMI-Independent Study has changed its policies on the acquisition of printed materials. The on-line enrollment function has been disabled for all courses that are available for download and/or interactive participation. While current printed stocks last, students may request printed materials/CD-ROMs by contacting the ISP staff toll-free at 800-238-3358, extension 1200, or direct at (301) 447-1200.

New Online Continuing Medical Education Programs on Obesity

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in cooperation with the  North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO) http://www.naaso.org has developed two free online continuing medical education modules on the assessment and management of overweight and obesity in adults. These modules provide health care practitioners with practical information based on a thorough review of the science that was published in the

Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults: Evidence Report.

http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/ob_home.htm

The courses review the importance of weight management and the health risks associated with overweight and obesity, what patients should be treated and how  they should be treated, the motivations that lead to successful weight loss, and appropriate treatment strategies. Learn about these important issuesthrough the use of case studies and the treatment algorithm. The courses are available on the NHLBI Web site at http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/obesitycme/, as well as through the NAASO Website at http://www.naaso.org.

The courses are free and are available online all of the time. CinT-Med, Inc. has designated each educational activity for a maximum of 2 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.
