The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing offers scholarship awards ($500), generally one per semester, to qualified students who focus on environmental and/or occupational health nursing in one of their graduate practicum experiences. Both Clinical Nurse Specialist
and Family Nurse Practitioner students can apply. This award mechanism
is funded through the Great Lakes Scholars in Environmental Health Program
at UWM School of Nursing through a grant from the Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry and the Association of Occupational and Environmental
Clinics. Full- and Part-time students are eligible. A similar scholarship award is available through the American Industrial Hygiene Association for full-time students.

The purpose of the GLS program is to promote environmental health awareness among primary care providers throughout
the Great Lakes area by bringing occupational and environmental health content into medical and nursing school curricula. |
Consistent with the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine,
environmental health encompasses human health effects of chemical, physical, biological, and psychosocial hazards in the general
environment where people live, work, and play, as well as lifestyle factors.
The Great Lakes Scholars Program at UWM consists of:
- Environmental health unit in 690-754 Comprehensive Assessment of Health for
all graduate students and
- A $500 scholarship for CNS and FNP Students who are selected as GLS awardees
- GLS awardees make a commitment to:
- Focusing one semester's practicum on environmental or occupational health
as it relates to the target population served (primary care clinic or pediatric, maternal-child, gerontology, occupational
health, public health, etc.)
- Completing environmental case studies and readings or equivalent, done in
tandem with the practicum
- Doing a clinical project that focuses on or integrates environmental health
To apply for a practicum scholarship :
- Graduate GPA of 3.2 or higher at the time of application
- Write a 1- to 2-page letter of interest, stating objectives for the practicum
with respect to the population and setting (e.g., environmental exposures that may be anticipated and outlining how the practicum
will support career goals)
- Submit letter of interest by May 15 (Summer & Fall award) or November
30 (Spring award) to the Student Affair's Office (CUN 135; c/o Robin Stanton -- 229-5047). Address letter to:
- Dr. Beth Rodgers, Chair of Scholarship and Awards Subcommittee of the SON
